Main Story Image Spacer Image What to Look For

Sunglasses were first developed to protect your eyes against harmful sunrays that could potentially cause damage to your eyes; however, in more recent times, they have become a part of everyday fashion and fun.  Because of this, many sunglasses manufactures began developing them with style in mind.  Over time, they were thought to be as trendy as any other accessory you might use to make a statement about yourself.

Purpose

Their main purposes, the ones for which they were created, is to protect your eyes while you are in the sun.  There are many types available, some of which can actually be worn over regular prescription glasses, if needed.  Still, no matter the reason for wearing them, they also serve a fashion purpose, as well.

In more recent years, sunglasses have become even more popular because of the fashion sense they evoke.  People who would not necessarily use them for the original intended purpose are now buying them as an accessory to their trendy wardrobe.  In fact, it is not uncommon for people to own several pairs of sunglasses to be worn with different outfits on different occasions.

Benefits

There are several useful benefits to wearing sunglasses.  The first and foremost benefit, as previously discussed in this article, is that they help keep out those UV rays that can be so harmful to your eyes.  In addition, they express attitude and help make a fashion statement about you.  They can also add another dimension to your appearance, by enhancing your face in accentuating its features, and giving you an altogether different look.  They have now become a must have, and many people don’t leave home without them.

Choosing The Right Sunglasses

Choosing the right sunglasses is just as essential in displaying your sense of fashion as it is for protecting your eyes.  You want to choose glasses that not only express your individual style, but also look good on you by bringing out your best facial features.  This means choosing a pair that best fits your facial type.  The first step in doing so is to establish what shape your face is, and determine how best to accentuate it.

If you have a square face, you want to choose frames that are slightly curved so the top will downplay the jaw line.  A brand that fits this specification is Aviator®, though other wrap styles will work just fine.  By choosing this type of frame, your facial features will stand out, your eyes will be protected, and you will be expressing your attitude and mood in a way that best suits you.

For a round face, straight or angular frames are preferred, usually in a deep color like black or tortoise.  These colors will flatter the features of this facial type.  If you are looking for a good, fashionable fit, you might try square frames with colored lenses.

If you have a triangular face, it is defined by a broad forehead, and a narrow mouth and chin.  Here, you would want to complement your face with thin rims and vertical lines.  For this, sleek oval frames with colored lenses would look very becoming, and accentuate all the right features.

An oblong face is similar to a square face, only with more length.  This facial type looks best with a frame that will cover as much of the center portion as possible.  This means you should avoid large frames, heavy nose bridges, bold colors, and square shapes.  You might even try experimenting with updated classics to form a trendier look.

If you have an oval face, you can get away with choosing more different shapes than with any other facial type; however, you should always choose frames that are in direct proportion with the size of your face.  This leaves you many options and the ability to choose from many different styles.  You can even select different types to wear for various occasions.

When choosing sunglasses, you should also consider your nose.  Noses of different sizes need different types of frame.  For example, oversize frames balance out a large nose, while short noses require frames with a high bridge and a light color.  Long noses should be complemented with a double bridge and high sidebars, which will draw attention to the temples.  This will make the overall affect very becoming.

A good rule of thumb to follow when choosing sunglasses is to go for the frame that is the opposite from your face.  It’s okay to experiment with several different types of frames before making your choice.  You can also purchase different types of frames, as long as they look good on your face.  While making your decisions, however, remember that the main purpose of sunglasses is to help protect your eyes, so be sure to choose carefully.  Make sure they are a comfortable fit, and always keep in mind that they will serve you better while on your face than if they always remain in a purse or pocket.
